The frigid New York winter of 2015 has already been good to Math4Science. On February 7th, we held our first fundraiser, at the Brooklyn home of our CEO and Co-Founder Justine Henning and her husband, Tony Scott. Over 75 supporters came out on a chilly evening to learn about the progress Math4Science has made in the past year, from building our Board of Directors to establishing connections with scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians in dozens of states across the country and a number of NYC-area schools.
Why support us in 2015? Because we’re ready to hire the master math teachers and coders who will create Math4Science’s seventh grade section of our Explore Math curriculum. Donations sent to Math4Science will make this possible. With your help, we will make sure that seventh graders discover the fun and amazing opportunities the math they are learning can provide.
Over wine and a light menu, guests heard about our progress from Board Chair Colin Chellman and Board Member Eduardo Castell, as well as from CEO Justine Henning and COO Brendan Mernin. We have been busy profiling STEM professionals, establishing a comprehensive legal and organizational framework, meeting with schools and foundations, and developing a comprehensive K-12 math curriculum. Speakers also highlighted our plans for the coming months, when we will continue to update our scientist profiles, hire teachers and coders to write math problems and update our website, and raise our profile among schools, foundations, and corporations.
Our initial fundraiser raised approximately $6000, which we hope to put toward hiring a skilled and experienced middle school math teacher who can help write part of the curriculum. We maintain as a core principle the idea that Math4Science will, unlike so many commercial providers, employ classroom veterans as content writers, so that our math problems will work seamlessly in a variety of classroom and tutoring settings.
